چکیده

This paper elucidates the energy transfer and conversion processes in near-field thermophotovoltaic (TPV) systems, considering local radiation absorption and photocurrent generation in the TPV cell. Radiation heat transfer in a multilayered structure is modeled using the fluctuation–dissipation theorem, and the electric current generation is evaluated based on the photogeneration and recombination of electron–hole pairs in different regions of the TPV cell. The effects of near-field radiation on the photon penetration depth, photocurrent generation, and quantum efficiency are examined in the spectral region of interest. The detailed analysis performed in the present work demonstrates that, while the near-field operation can enhance the power throughput, the conversion efficiency is not much improved and may even be reduced. Subsequently, a modified design of near-field TPV systems is proposed to improve the efficiency. r 2007 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Mie-Metamaterials-Based Thermal Emitter for Near-Field Thermophotovoltaic Systems

In this work, we theoretically analyze the performance characteristics of a near-field thermophotovoltaic system consisting a Mie-metamaterial emitter and GaSb-based photovoltaic cell at separations less than the thermal wavelength. The emitter consists of a tungsten nanoparticle-embedded thin film of SiO 2 deposited on bulk tungsten. Numerical results presented here are obtained using formulae...

Optimal placement and sizing of distributed generation considering FACTS devices and load uncertainty using hybrid sine-cosine algorithm and particle swarm optimization (HSCA-PSO)

Using Distributed Generation (DG) in electrical distribution networks brings many advantages and thus, optimal placement and sizing of these units become important. Most of the researches in this field neglect the effect of transmission system on distribution section. These researches also ignore the effect of Flexible Alternating Current Transmission Systems (FACTS). This thesis proposes a new...

Overcoming the black body limit in plasmonic and graphene near-field thermophotovoltaic systems.

Near-field thermophotovoltaic (TPV) systems with carefully tailored emitter-PV properties show large promise for a new temperature range (600 – 1200K) solid state energy conversion, where conventional thermoelectric (TE) devices cannot operate due to high temperatures and far-field TPV schemes suffer from low efficiency and power density. We present a detailed theoretical study of several diffe...

Graphene-based photovoltaic cells for near-field thermal energy conversion

Thermophotovoltaic devices are energy-conversion systems generating an electric current from the thermal photons radiated by a hot body. While their efficiency is limited in far field by the Schockley-Queisser limit, in near field the heat flux transferred to a photovoltaic cell can be largely enhanced because of the contribution of evanescent photons, in particular for a source supporting a su...
